between the video camera lens and where

Surveyors rope can come in handy on ghost investigations.
You need to have a quality, reliable measuring device. If you are running a cctv system or single unit camcorders, try running a surveyors rope along the far wall in front of the lens for some scope. If you have a longer surveyors rope, or several, try laying one perpendicular to the other. This will add something of known size to 'anything' that might appear on your ghost hunting investigations.
